Turn Disappointment to Thanksgiving by Norman Vincent Peale

Turn Disappointment to Thanksgiving Your setback may actually be a wonderful new appointment or plan for your life, namely, God's plan. By Norman Vincent Peale Disappointment is a prevailing and common adversary of the human spirit and may strike you almost anytime. Therefore one should learn to deal with it. Four verses can be of great help in so doing. “Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward” (Hebrews 10:35). When disappointment strikes, simply hold tight to your confidence. Do not petulantly toss it away. Instead, affirm. I am confident. I believe. It will require some mental and spiritual effort to maintain confidence. Your tendency may be, in desperation, to toss it. So focus your mind by an act of will on confidence. The promise of the text is that such practice will bring great reward. “Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget not all his benefit” (Psalm 103:2). The practice of thanksgiving is a great viewpoint changer. Add up all the benefits you possess. This wise verse tells you to start thanking the Lord for all the benefits He has given you, instead of mentally, and perhaps vocally, harping on what you glumly believe has been denied you... Be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). The word contentment derives from two Latin words, con and tenere, meaning to hold together. When you have faith in God, your mind will hold together so efficiently that you can always recover from a disappointment. Thus you can be content and, out of contentment, great things can happen. “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). When disappointed, try loving God all the more. Carefully analyze yourself to make certain you are thinking and living in harmony with His spiritual purpose. It could be that you are off the spiritual beam. Instead of dwelling upon the word disappointment, think of it as “Hisappointment.” What you regard as a disappointment may actually be a wonderful new appointment or plan for your life, namely, His plan. Always take a positive view toward disappointment. It could be that through disappointment you are being shown another way or being led toward something different. If you have tried sincerely and prayerfully, and things have not gone well, then look upon disappointment as an opportunity to ask whether you should move under God’s guidance in another direction. Anxious About Nothing by Rod Parsley

Anxious About Nothing Be anxious about nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 The Bible often commands us to avoid anxiety and fear. God tells us that He will supply for our every need. Even though we may not see the fruits of our faith immediately, we should always thank God, knowing He will bring them when the time is right. Philippians is very clear on this point-prayer and petition must be accompanied by thanksgiving. In Philippians 4:19 God's Word promises that He will supply "all your needs in accordance with His riches." Picture for a moment what the riches of God must look like! There is no need to fear that these boundless blessings will ever run out. God has promised you the abundance of His riches! Be of the same mindset as David in Psalms 118:6, "The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" Don't look down at the ground in discouragement-look up to heaven and praise Him for the great gifts He has promised you! Then get up and go, believing and expecting that God will supply for all your needs. Today is the day to stand on those everlasting promises! The Power of Thanksgiving by Rod Parsley

The Power of Thanksgiving This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 2 Corinthians 9:12 If you want to live a life of abundance, start by thanking God. Colossians 4:2 says, "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful." Before you can begin to receive more blessings you must look around and see the blessings God has already brought to you! God knows all that we need even before we pray for it, and He is waiting to pour gifts and blessings down upon you. Your thoughts and prayers do not have to be constantly on your mind for God to fulfill them-God is big enough for all of the trials and problems you face today. Look around you and give thanks for all that you have today. Give thanks in faith, for God not only provides the basic needs of those who thank and praise Him, but pours abundance upon their heads as well. Make every day a day of thanksgiving and praise! Praising God publicly is one way we can take the light from beneath the bushel and shine for the unsaved around us. Do it as an expression of love for your heavenly Father who provides for you. A Devotion to Help You Follow God's Guidance

A Devotion to Help You Follow God's Guidance Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13–14 (NIV) A few years ago my husband and I hiked a remote area of the Ottawa National Forest. We’ve done a lot of hiking, including sections of the Superior Hiking Trail, so we felt fairly confident. But the old-growth forests provided a new experience. Instead of clear paths cutting through thick underbrush, we found stretches of huge trees in all directions, with smooth forest floor coated with a bed of fallen leaves. No dirt path visible. Nothing to indicate which way to go, except for small trail markers nailed to trees. At first, we could scan into the distance and spot the next marker and know which way to head. But sometimes trail markers were missing. We found several broken off, or resting in the dirt near the base of a tree. When the trail seemed to disappear, I forged ahead. Eventually I pulled to a stop. “I have no idea where I’m going.” My husband muttered, “That never stops you.” We backtracked to the last marker and tried a new direction until we found the elusive next symbol. Our hike that day reminded me of the adventure of following Christ. He might give me a glimpse of the final destination, but most of my life journey, I’m aiming just for the next small trail marker up ahead. My steps lead through rocky terrain, beautiful vistas and swampy bogs. Often God’s guidance is as clear as the white diamond markers on tree trunks, giving me courage for tough climbs and wet slogs. Other times, I struggle to see the path. I flounder in a likely direction for a while and then need to backtrack a bit, stand still and listen until Jesus gets me back on track. His narrow path is the only one that will lead me safely through the wild forests of my life and home to my eternal destiny. Faith Step: Ask Jesus to show you clear trail markers for the next step in your journey on His path. By Sharon Hinck This devotion is excerpted from Mornings with Jesus 2013.

When you've had a setback by Elizabeth Sherrill

When You've Had a Setback This excerpt from Time Out for the Spirit reminds us to turn to God and thrive through life's challenges. Read: "Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not." –Lamentations 3:22 Reflect: The slopes of the Rocky Mountains offer fragile footholds to trees. Storms, drought and bitter cold warp their growth. But the trees live on. I stood before one twisted ponderosa pine, marveling at the disasters it had survived. Ice had broken its limbs, fierce winds bent its trunk almost level. Yet the tree was not only alive, it thrived—thrusting the new year’s growth toward the sun. Studying that gnarled outline, I saw in fact that this was the secret of the tree’s survival. After each assault, its branches once more sought the sun, reaching skyward from wherever the latest setback had left them, sustaining the overall pattern of upward growth. Scientists call this persistence in plants heliotropism, “turning toward the sun.” There’s a word for the same quality in human life, the ever-repeated turning to God, no matter what traumas come our way. The word, of course, is hope. Pray: Father, I’m feeling a lot like that ponderosa pine—beat to the ground by yet another setback. I turn now to You, the Light, for new growth and renewed hope as You shape my heart, not in spite of these setbacks, but through them. Do: Imagine or draw a picture of a damaged tree, thriving in spite of the traumas it has survived. By Elizabeth Sherrill This article is excerpted from Time Out for the Spirit.
